  • How many Calories are in a meal?
Does it really matter? Did you know that the calories you eat are not really the calories your body absorbs/assimilates or uses? Calorie count tells us the total amount of energy in food without conveying anything about the accessibility of that energy. Your meal may have a 1000 calories, but that doesnt mean that your body can use all of it. Digestion is a complex process and cant be limited to a food burning furnace (Did you know that's how calories are counted?) Your body uses different metabolic pathways to break down different nutrients. Some of your meal's nutrients are destined to be dropped off as poop hours later. Also, your body needs to work harder to break down raw food compared to cooked food. So, your body can easily access the calories in cooked food compared to raw food. There are various other things including but not limited to how different food interacts within your gut and most importantly the diversity of the bacterial colonies in your gut. Yes, this affects the calories that are actually available to your body. What you do want to cue into is your body's satiety signals. In general a balanced meal high in fiber, fats, protein and complex carbs will keep you full for longer because it takes longer for your body to break this down. Compared to a meal that has processed foods, sugars etc. And beyond the numbers, you do want to look at the nutritive value of the food that you are eating and how it benefits you. To give an idea - 1 large banana is about 125 calories and 1 gulab jamun is about 150 calories. The quality of your calories matter.
